Rum Ocean

A story of learning how to deal with whatever life throws your way.

My ears rang and my head hurt. My mouth was dry and my tongue felt like sand paper. I did not want to open my eyes in fear of finding I was in heaven. After a few minutes of laying there I convinced my eyelids to slowly open, I was greeted by the sight of the bright sun over whelming my eyes. Shutting them again and slowly raising my left hand to my pounding head. I rubbed my cool hand on my now sun burnt face.

As I laid there thinking of how long I’d been laying out in the sun while rubbing my forehead I suddenly remembered what had happened. I sat up quickly and felt sick to my stomach. I just let it come up and out. There was no stopping it and I did not care. Once I had finished and felt a little better I went back to the memory in which had made me sit up with fear. My eyes then took in something so beautiful yet so scary at the same time. I was on an island.

I let out a few select curse words and then got a chill all over my acing body. Where was everyone? What had happened? Why and how was I here? The “dream” I had was not a dream. It had been real!

I thought hard at what I could recall. It was not much but it was quite easy to put the pieces together. All I could recall was sitting in my seat with my rum and coke enjoying my final read thru over my new book I had written for the new publishing company that I was signing on with in London. Then remembering that we started to go thru an extremely bad storm making it hard for me to concentrate on my reading, a sturdiest came by and told me to please put up my tray, she had not stayed there to see if I did so, which I had. Then there was some sort of announcement and that was it. That’s all my mind could remember. I could guess that somehow we had gone down and my luck had carried me to this island.

I slowly stood up. Nothing seemed to be broken. I did have a good size gash on my right arm. Nothing I needed to worry about too much, just so long as I kept it clean and somehow bandaged.

I looked out to the ocean and could see nothing but rolling blue. I then turned around to face the island and sucked in a breath. It was a very beautiful island. Huge palm trees and other plants, the sand looked like powdered sugar, and there was also a greenish mountain. It kind of reminded me of the island of Tom Hanks Cast Away. I let a small crazy laugh, maybe this was the same island they filmed on. I shook the thought out quickly and started to think I needed to go into survival mode right now. I took a couple of steps and felt sick to my stomach again, but did not let go this time. I just sucked in a deep breath and started walking toward the jungle brush. I stopped just before I entered and reached down and picked up a large branch. I tested its strength on one of the nearby trunks of a palm tree. Smacking it against the tree serial times caused the tree to drop something and causing me to jump back, I then noticed that the object that had fallen from the tree was not an animal, but a coconut. I smiled and looked up at the tree and noticed that the tree had a couple more as well as the other surrounding trees. I felt already better due to the thought of having coconuts on the island. I had found food and a supplement to water.

My defense branch had held up well and so I took my first steps into the jungle. It was not as over grown as I thought it would have been. As I walked I kept my eyes open for other noticeable editable foods and also for harmful objects as well.

As I walked deeper into the jungle a squawking above me caught my attention and I looked up into a tree and sitting on a branch, eating some kind of berry was a toucan. He was not afraid of me and looked me over curiously. I then knew that this island was not inhabited by humans. I took another deep breath full of sadness and walked on.

I walked for a good half hour and came to a clearing. It was a good size clearing. I walked around the large clearing and then noticed a yellow object hanging from some of the trees. I walked up to one of the trees to get a better look, to my amazement it was bananas hanging from the tree. I took my branch and started to hit some of the lower bananas, causing a couple to fall. I picked up my prize and sat down and started to eat. The taste was amazing! I did not know if it was due to I was so hungry or if because they had grown without any pesticides.

My last banana I chewed slowly. I closed my eyes and laid my head back on the trunk. I sat there and thought about where I was and what time it was. I wondered if I would ever see anyone ever again or if I would live out my days on this island, my ears then picked up noise, the sound of running water. I opened my eyes and was at an instant jog. I jogged toward the sound and it started to get louder. After five minutes of jogging thru the jungle I came to another larger clearing. There in the center of it was a large pool of water with a waterfall pouring over the greenish mountain side. I jumped and hooted. I walked over to the pool and bent down and dipped my fingers into the water. I sniffed it for any trace of salt or sulfur. I smelled none. I brought the water to my lips and let the tip of my tongue taste it. The water was cool and tasted sweet. I looked around in the mud for trace of any other animal or thing that might have drunk the water. I then noticed some bird prints and a hoofed print. I then allowed myself to drink just enough to wet my mouth and to give my body some hydration. I was going to allow myself time to see if the water was truly safe for human consumption.

I decided to then head back to the beach and walk that area for a while. Plus I had decided that was the best place to stay for the night. I arrived to the beach with the sky a very pretty orange. I still had a good two hours left before it got completely dark. I started to walk the beach toward the North. I had been walking for about ten minutes and was getting ready to walk past the side of the greenish mountain. As I turned the corner I was in aw when I saw what was on the beach in front of me. There where suitcases and some other odds and ends of the plane. My dream had now become a reality. My legs gave away and I dropped in the sand and started to cry. It was not fair, why was I the only one to live out of a plane carrying at least a hundred and fifty people.

I sat there and cried for a good ten minutes. I then looked out to the beach with tears still in my eyes and noticed a odd shape laying on the beach. I stood up and started to walk as I tried wiping away my tears. I then could not stand it anymore and noticed my legs where now at a full run. As I started to get closer I noticed it was not some suitcase or odd piece of the destroyed plane. It had a familiar shape, but I would not say the name of the object in fear of jinxing it.
